Pedestrian Corridor Improvements - Peachtree Street

Current Updates:
The Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) is in the process of completing the Concept Report and drawings for the proposed improvements.  As part of this phase, ADID has met with various stakeholders regarding the proposed improvements, including property owners, businesses, citizens and residents, parade organizers and transit operators to discuss the potential impacts to people, places or events.  The comments gathered from these meetings will be analyzed and used to make adjustments to the conceptual drawings where possible.

In addition to the above, ADID and the design team, Kimley –Horn & Associates have met with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to discuss the proposed conceptual drawings and draft concept report.  The purpose of this meeting was to seek comments and feedback from GDOT on the design in preparation for access to funds.  ADID will continue to refine the conceptual drawings while meeting with stakeholders over the next few months.

Background
Peachtree Street has been identified as the next corridor for implementation as part of the Imagine Downtown Master Plan. During the Development of the Master Plan, citizens, residents and stakeholders expressed their desire for Peachtree Street to be the premier street of the southeast.  As Atlanta’s “Main Street,” Peachtree Street is envisioned as the A+ location for high-rise offices, thriving shopping and entertainment districts, and the heart of the hotel district.  Peachtree Street is the one corridor in Downtown that traverses and connects all of Downtown’s signature districts. It will be a destination unto itself, as well as a gateway to other neighborhoods.  New housing within the corridor will attract more retail, entertainment and cultural venues.

Emerging priority projects:
• Revitalize vacant historic buildings
• Bring streetcars back to Peachtree Street to improve mobility in the corridor
• Enhance Peachtree Street sidewalks with pedestrian amenities like additional street trees, lighting and planters
• Invest in capital improvements for Woodruff Park to support increased programming of special events and activities

Through this program, Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID), in partnership with the Midtown Alliance and Midtown Improvement District (MID), are working towards the implementation of transportation improvements, streetscapes, parks and other public space enhancements within Downtown and Midtown.

ADID and MID are providing 100 percent of the funding to support this scope of work for preliminary engineering (P/E).  Construction funding has not yet been obtained, but is anticipated through Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) funding and/or State bond funding from Governor Perdue’s Fast Forward program with the required local matching funds from ADID and MID.  Although project cost estimates will be refined during the P/E process, it is anticipated that construction costs will total approximately $12 million.

A topographical survey and a traffic study have been completed for the corridor, and preliminary conceptual designs have been drafted. The project is also being coordinated with the activities of the Atlanta Committee for Progress’s “Peachtree Corridor Taskforce”, a group that was assembled by Mayor Franklin to develop an executable vision and comprehensive improvement plan for the Peachtree Street Corridor.
