Organizations
Many preservation organizations are at work in Fairlie-Poplar. Many of
these organizations offer technical assistance as well as development
incentives, such as historic tax credits and facade easements. Descriptions
of these organizations and how to contact them is listed below.
Atlanta
Urban Design Commission

The Urban Design Commission was first established in 1975 by a City of
Atlanta ordinance and is the City agency responsible for the nomination
and regulation of historic buildings and districts in Atlanta. The Commission
also advises the Mayor and the City Council regarding the design issues
related to city projects.
Historic Preservation Division,
Georgia Department
of Natural Resources
The Historic Preservation Division works in partnership with others to
identify, protect and preserve historic and archaeological resources in
Georgia. Thirteen preservation programs authorized by federal and state
law are administered including the National Register, federal and state
tax incentives for rehabilitation, federal and state grants, and rehabilitation
technical assistance. These preservation programs foster historic resource
stewardship, encourage neighborhood revitalization and support community
and economic development.
National Register
of Historic Places

The National Register of Historic Places is the Nation's official list
of cultural resources worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National
Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a
national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts
to identify, evaluate and protect our historic and archeological resources.
(Fairlie-Poplar has been a National Register Historic District in 1982
and the District also includes several individually designed buidlings.)
National Trust for Historic
Preservation

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is the only national, private
organization chartered by Congress to encourage public participation in
the preservation of sites, buildings, and objects significant in American
History.
The Georgia Trust
for Historic Preservation

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is the United State's largest
statewide preservation organization. With the support of its 8,000 members,
the Trust works to protect and preserve Georgia's historic resources and
diverse cultural heritage.
Atlanta Preservation
Center

The Atlanta Preservation Center is a city-wide non-profit association
composed of over 1600 members. The Center promotes historic preservation
in Atlanta through education and advocacy. In addition to conducting walking
tours in ten historic sites and districts, the Center publishes a newsletter,
has a speakers bureau, and works with neighborhoods, developers, businesses,
and government on preservation issues and projects.
