This spring Downtown Atlanta will gain a new public sculpture garden,
thanks to Georgia State University's Ernest
G. Welch School of Art and Design. The Student Sculpture Garden Project
will be located at the intersection of Gilmer Street and Peachtree Center
Avenue.
Students recently submitted proposals for their work for
the exhibition and Leslie Garran of Decatur and Alice Di Certo of Monopoli,
Italy, were chosen to receive the first commissions. Their work will be
installed in the sculpture garden in March and remain on display for a
year.

Selections were made by a committee of Georgia State faculty, students
and staff, along with Ayokunle Odeleye, a sculptor and teacher from Atlanta’s
Metropolitan Public Art Coalition.
“This unusual public art project gives our students
a new presence on campus,” said Cathy Byrd, project co-coordinator
and gallery director. “Our goal is to promote the creative development
and exposure of student artists and to present public art that will enhance
pedestrian encounters with our downtown campus.”
