Century-old Imperial Hotel Reborn as Downtown 'Commons'

Chalk up another win for Downtown's historic preservationists. Standing over Peachtree Street since 1911, the Imperial Hotel has a fresh face and retooled purpose. Rechristened "The Commons at Imperial Hotel," the eight-story brick tower will host a grand opening and lighting ceremony this evening, with Mayor Kasim Reed and a host of other officials expected to attend. We've got a sneak peek, courtesy of the developers and owners: Atlanta-based Columbia Residential and the National Church Residences. The building will offer 90 units (all LEED Gold-certified) for Atlanta residents in need of permanent supportive housing. Since 1996, the Imperial has been a respite for residents with special needs or those coming out of homelessness. The new concept offers permanent supportive housing through a proven "housing first" model and is uniquely designed for the special needs of residents, officials said. Changes include modernized floor plan configurations, fully updated leasing and management offices, resident amenities and a suite for case managers and service providers. Each residence is equipped with a full, energy-efficient kitchen and bathroom — and the views aren't too shabby, either. If only the solemn Medical Arts Building across the way could be so lucky.
