Construction Notice: Fairlie-Poplar Historic District Streetscape

Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District are pleased to announce that construction will begin September 13, 2010 on the planned sidewalk and roadway improvements along Walton Street NW between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Cone Street and Nassau Street NW between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street NW. The project will provide enhanced concrete and brick-edged sidewalks, sidewalk lighting, landscaping, planters, granite curbing, trash receptacles, as well as, new pavement and pavement markings. The Fairlie-Poplar Historic District Streetscape total project budget is approximately $1.0 million. Funding is being provided by the City of Atlanta Quality of Life Bond Program and the Georgia   Department of Transportation via the American Recovery and Revitalization Act of 2009.

Please note the following details about the construction process:

Schedule and Sequencing
A ‘Notice to Proceed’ has been issued to the contractor. The total contract duration is 240 days (6 months) with completion expected in February 2011. The progression schedule will be updated continuously for delays or changes, weather, etc. The progression of work will be as follows:

  • Nassau Street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street – east side
    September 12 through October 15*
  • Nassau Street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street – west side
    October 3 through November 7*
  • Walton Street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street – east side
    October 31 through November 30*
  • Walton Street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Spring Street – west side
    November 21 through December 20*
  • Walton Street between Spring Street and Cone Street – east side
    December 12 through January 3*
  • Walton Street between Spring Street and Cone Street – west side
    December 28 through January 15*
  • Resurfacing and striping throughout both corridors
    January 3 through January 21*

*Dates are provided for planning purpose, are estimated based on the initial schedule and are subject to change. Schedule updates and progress updates will be posted on-line at www.atlantadowntown.com and sent periodically via e-mail.


Project Approach
The contractor is limited to disturbing 300 feet of sidewalk area at one time. However, paving, striping and some furnishings will be handled for the entire project area. All sidewalk closures and detours will be accessible and well-marked. The permitted work hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Night work requires special permission and consideration. The team’s goal and desire is to schedule work around special events, busy hours of the day and ensure access to businesses throughout the duration of the project.
