Edgewood Ave. Bridge Project On Track For April Opening

January 24,2014

Work is rolling along on the Edgewood Avenue bridge replacement project, meaning progress on the Beltline's Eastside Trail is right around the corner. Ish. Beltline spokesman Ethan Davidson said crews placed the dramatic-sounding "primary superstructure" — translation: big beams — for the new bridge last month. Road and sidewalk improvements for the crossing between Airline and Krog streets should begin "in the coming weeks," he said. The project is still on pace for an end-of-April completion, Davidson said.

Once the brand new bridge is finished, work should begin on the next leg of the Eastside Trail, which will stretch from its current stop at Irwin Street, under Edgewood and down to DeKalb Avenue. The Beltline folks have put together a pretty comprehensive photo log of progress on the bridge project that's worth checking out, if you dig that kind of thing. The continued work highlights what's been an otherwise quiet few months for the Beltline, though it did see a groundbreaking last week for the Gateway that will connect the Eastside Trail to Historic Fourth Ward Park.
