Flux Projects Announces Helena Reckitt as Curator for Flux Night 2013

February 7,2013

Flux Projects is excited to announce Helena Reckitt, an internationally respected curator and critic, as its curator for Flux Night 2013, Atlanta’s fourth annual night of art + experimentation.

“We had always planned to grow the event to include a major outside curator,” explained Flux Projects’ Executive Director Anne Dennington, “and a grant from the LUBO Fund and sponsorship from MailChimp have enabled us to initiate this program this year. Reckitt’s familiarity with Atlanta and her recent experience as a curator for Toronto’s 2012 Nuit Blanche, the event upon which Flux Night was modeled, make her the ideal first choice.

“By working with respected curators from around the world, we hope to attract new artists and enhance the event’s profile in Atlanta and beyond.  We have had three very successful years, but it’s time to raise the bar.”

Reckitt said, “Flux Night has become a vital event in the Atlanta arts calendar, and I am honored to be joining the organization as its first external curator for the 2013 edition. My curatorial theme, Free Association, evokes the pleasure of mixing and mingling at street level that is central to Flux Night, and that car-centric Atlanta does not always afford. It also points to the strong history of digital art and collective activity within the city. Having lived in Atlanta for seven years until 2005, I am looking forward to reconnecting with the artists and arts community, and to introducing artists from elsewhere whose work will, I hope, resonate within this context.”

Flux Night 2013 will have two categories of projects: curated projects selected directly by Reckitt and proposed projects selected from an open call for proposals by a committee that will include Reckitt along with Flux Projects staff and board.  The call will be released in the coming week, and artists will apply through CaFÉ (Call for Entry, callforentry.org ).

Flux Night will again return to the Castleberry Hill Arts District, this year on Saturday, October 5.  Updates will be posed regularly to the Flux Projects website (fluxprojects.org) and Facebook page.

Early sponsors of Flux Night 2013 include MailChimp, the LUBO Fund, Turner Broadcasting Company, Inc., Creative Loafing, and Heineken USA.
