As Georgia State University prepares for the start of fall semester, officials released figures showing record enrollment and other benchmarks.

As of Wednesday morning 31,166 students enrolled, spokeswoman Andrea Jones said. Last fall the university enrolled 30,427 students, according to data from the University System of Georgia.

Georgia State also set records with the incoming freshmen class. More than 12,000 students applied and about 3,000 will attend when classes being Monday, officials said.

Their average math and reading SAT scores totaled 1105, a 15-point climb from last fall, officials said. Their average high school grade point average was 3.37, a new record.

For the first time in about five years the freshmen class is no longer 60 percent female and 40 percent male. This year's class is 54 percent female and 46 percent male. The increase in males could be connected to the college's inaugural football team, officials said.
