Skyhigh Soccer Tournament Hits Downtown Atlanta Rooftop

September 15,2015

Soccer teams from across the Greater Atlanta area will compete in fast-paced rooftop soccer games Friday and Saturday, September 18th and 19th in the heart of Downtown Atlanta. Dragon Goal USA, a Georgia-based company established to energize and strengthen the practice of soccer in the United States, and Sons of Pitches FC, a growing Atlanta soccer club offering adult leagues and community pickups inside the Perimeter, will host this innovative skyline soccer tournament next to SkyView and Centennial Olympic Park.

Two self-contained Dragon Goal soccer fields will be installed on the rooftop at 98 Cone Street NW 30303 on Friday September 18 from 7pm-11pm, and all day Saturday September 19 from 9am-11pm for adult 3v3 tournaments.  Youth players ages 15 and under are invited to play in a free Street Cup tournament Saturday morning from 9am-1pm, hosted by Atlanta-based non-profit Soccer in the Streets.

The event is FREE and open to the public to watch the games, hang out on the roof, enjoy local food, listen to music by DJ Pattycakes, play FIFA 16 on two Xbox stations, snap photos at the rooftop photo booth, and watch street soccer jugglers and a live graffiti art show.

Local businesses and organizations including Sweetwater Brewing, Georgia Organics, Atlanta Silverbacks, Sidebar, Sports DeKalb, Soccerfest, Terminus Legion and others will have tents and activities for attendees. Players, friends and families are welcome to join the rooftop party, and take in beautiful views of Atlanta in all directions.

Christopher Wedge, co-founder and president of Son of Pitches FC says, "The essence of what we're doing is re-purposing under-utilized space into active community space. We have taken the most accessible part of town, home to the highest population of Atlanta's workforce, and opened up new opportunities to play the world's most popular sport right in the middle of it.”

Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall stated, “This is a great way of temporarily re-purposing private spaces for public use in the heart of the city. One day young people who practiced their soccer skills on the rooftop of a Downtown parking garage could be playing on Atlanta’s Major League Soccer team.”

Event schedule:  FRIDAY, SEPT 18: 7pm – 11pm, SATURDAY, SEPT 19: 9am – 11pm
