Teleworking

With more connectivity in more places across Georgia, it’s clear that telework has become a mainstream work option with room to grow. In Atlanta, telework has emerged as the region’s most popular commute alternative, growing from 30 percent in 2007 to 40 percent in 2010. Some 336,000 employees in Atlanta telework at least once a week - equal to the total daily traffic volume headed in both directions on the Downtown Connector. And 600,000 Atlanta commuters do it occasionally - enough to fill Turner Field 12 times!

According to the Telework Research Network, 20 to 30 million people currently work from home at least one day a week, and 2.8 million consider their home their primary place of work. This type of growth is not surprising when you look at the advantages telework brings to employers. Approximately 86 percent of teleworkers say they are more productive when working at home. In addition, 76 percent are more willing to put in extra time and are more loyal to their company since they started teleworking.

CAP/ADID's Downtown Green Source program and the Clean Air Campaign are great resources for employers looking to expand commuting options within their offices. Consulting services and financial incentives can be provided to businesses launching or expanding their teleworking programs.
