From music to marine life to a WNBA tip-off, #BeDowntown for weekend fun.
1. Shaky Beats Music Festival, Centennial Olympic Park
Brought to you by the same folks who produced last weekend’s Shaky Knees Festival, the inaugural Shaky Beats Fest is sure to infuse the crowd with indie, EDM and hip-hop energy. Come for a three-day lineup that includes Nas, !!!, Major Lazer, ODESZA and Big Gigantic and stay for all the great eateries and attractions the Centennial Park District boasts. Take note of the discounts and promotions offered to wristbanded festival-goers, too.
2. Sips Under the Sea and Endangered Species Day, the Georgia Aquarium
Take a dive into an exciting happy hour at the Aquarium’s Sips Under the Sea cocktail hour series. This month’s theme? Fiesta! Register in advance. Beyond entertainment, the Georgia Aquarium is a space for education. Endangered Species Day takes place Friday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Find staff members throughout exhibits where endangered species are housed and learn about the Aquarium’s participation in worldwide conservation efforts to protect endangered marine wildlife. Be sure to check out the new Under the Boardwalk sea lion experience, too.
3. Ladyfest 2016, Mammal Gallery
A queer and feminist arts and musical festival that fosters anti-oppression dialogue, this year’s Ladyfest focuses on public health issues, including environmental justice and HIV/AIDs. On Saturday, after an artist’s market and Girls Rock! Camp workshop at 368 Ponce, come to South Downtown’s Mammal Gallery for an interview between Cristen Conger and Andi Ziesler (7:00 p.m.), followed by music and performances featuring Larkin Grimm (starts at 8:30 p.m.). To learn more about Ladyfest Atlanta’s story, read Creative Loafing’s recent cover story.
4. Walk the Hall Free Admission Day, College Football Hall of Fame
Are you a football-loving recent high school or college graduate? Come to the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a copy of your diploma or a certificate of completion for free admission to the Hall! The Fan Experience includes a highlighted history of college football, games and activities on the indoor half-field, and, of course, the opportunity to grab lunch at the on-site Chick-fil-A.
5. Atlanta Dream vs. Chicago Sky Home Opener, Philips Arena
Head to Philips Arena to cheer on Atlanta’s WNBA team at their home opener. The first 2000 fans to arrive will receive a free t-shirt. Additionally, if you bring a gently used pair of sneakers to benefit Atlanta’s Girls on the Run nonprofit, you’ll receive a free voucher for another season game. Sunday’s game starts at 3:00 p.m., and remember that you can easily ride MARTA to get to Philips Arena.
