The current momentum occurring in Downtown can only be described as remarkable. Now is a critical time for Central Atlanta Progress to leverage the significant investment and activity in our community in order to further realize our mission to champion a healthy, vibrant and growing urban core.
Much of the unique, authentic energy that exists in the central city would not be possible without Central Atlanta Progress. In short, CAP makes Atlanta better. As the primary organization focused on Downtown Atlanta’s continued growth for the past 75 years, CAP is currently faced with a very good crisis. We are experiencing a surge of activity that far surpasses the two most recent growth periods (pre-Olympics and post-Georgia Aquarium), and our community is uniquely positioned to develop as the strong, vibrant, healthy heart of the region. At CAP, we intend to fully leverage the current positive real estate cycle and overall strong urban economy to ensure that our community continues to prosper. During the three-year Be Downtown campaign, CAP will focus its collective efforts on catalyzing new private investment that will support core infrastructure improvements and enhance the quality of life for all who interact with the community.
Through the Be Downtown campaign, we will focus on three priority areas. First, we are elevating the quality of life in Downtown Atlanta by expanding our GreenSource program, which provides critical connections, resources and education necessary to enhance the environmental sustainability of Atlanta. We are also developing a Public Parking Campaign and Partner for Hope program, which is a collaborative initiative of Atlanta’s leaders from all sectors committed to reducing street feedings by guiding those in need toward long term solutions. In 2014, we successfully launched the Downtown Daffodil Project and will expand it in 2015-16 to include 175,000 daffodils lining the path from the Center for Civil and Human Rights to the King Center.
We are also focused on generating economic impact in the heart of the City by creating an environment that is conducive to growth and economic vitality and easing the investment process by providing valuable research, data and connections. To leverage investment in the Atlanta Streetcar, CAP is encouraging private investment in new businesses and residences along the transit corridor, specifically supporting the creation of a Main Street organization, Sweet Auburn Works, Inc.
Finally, CAP is building an enhanced marketing program, leveraging attention attracted to the city with a strategic marketing campaign that supports the “Be Downtown” theme. This comprehensive plan casts a net across a broad range of audiences, from residents to visitors, business investors to national media. The campaign’s primary goal is to reinforce CAP’s role as the center of commercial, cultural, and civic activity across the region, while influencing positive perceptions about the heart of the city.
This is an extraordinary moment for our community. With more than $2 billion of new investment under construction and planned for the heart of the city, we are on the cusp of a new and exciting chapter. Now is the time to invest in our future in order to realize the full potential of Atlanta and the region.
