DaVinci Development Collaborative Selected to Direct Pre-Development
Planning of The Stitch, Downtown’s Vision to Cap the Connector
ATLANTA—Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (CAP/ADID) are pleased to announce that DaVinci Development Collaborative, LLC (DaVinci) has been selected to further implementation of the ambitious concept, “The Stitch,” by testing the feasibility of the plan and developing a roadmap for its execution.
In 2016, CAP/ADID released an initial concept design study for a new ¾-mile platform that spans the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector and ‘stitches’ Downtown back together with new streets, parks and real estate development opportunities. The concept, appropriately called The Stitch, proposes to reclaim approximately 14 acres of new urban greenspace atop a new platform structure spanning the Downtown Connector from the Civic Center MARTA Rail Station at West Peachtree Street to Piedmont Avenue.
While Atlanta is not unfamiliar with viaducts and reclaiming urban space over transportation infrastructure, The Stitch is unique in its scope and opportunity. Not only will it create new vibrant urban greenspace and transit oriented development at the Civic Center MARTA station, but it will also foster real estate investment and increased real estate values for this part of the City of Atlanta.
The roots of The Stitch date back to 2001 and plans for a new “Mayors Park” to honor mayors Maynard Jackson and Ivan Allen Jr. In subsequent years, the initial vison and proposal evolved through community planning efforts. Building on the momentum of these studies, ADID funded and contracted with Jacobs Engineering to develop The Stitch Concept Design Study, completed in 2016.
Now, ADID is excited to be furthering its evaluation of the redevelopment proposal with the assistance of DaVinci. Over the next twelve months, DaVinci will coordinate detailed project definition, advance technical feasibility research and create an implementation strategy.
John Goff, managing principal of DaVinci noted, “DaVinci is honored to partner with CAP/ADID on this critical phase of The Stitch which will be a significant Atlanta landmark. We thrive on collaborating with clients to help realize visions for complex urban development projects that make significant impacts and contributions to the community – and it’s hard to think of a more defining, exciting or catalytic project than The Stitch. Our team looks forward to delivering a strategy that will move The Stitch towards implementation.”
“The community’s positive response to the Stitch has been encouraging, and we are excited to harness that enthusiasm and take this important step forward toward the project’s reality,” said A.J. Robinson, President of Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District.
When complete, this new front door to Downtown will become a catalyst for stitching Midtown and Downtown together, creating a new neighborhood that, in essence, forms a unified central business district (CBD) for the City of Atlanta.
