Docomomo US, Georgia Chapter is pleased to announce their upcoming tour and special presentation, scheduled for October 5th, as part of the seventh annual national Docomomo Tour Day.

The focus of this year’s event is the development of downtown Atlanta and the significant impact of the work of John C. Portman, Jr. upon the city and ultimately the world. The tour begins with refreshments and a reception in the atrium space of SunTrust Plaza Garden Offices (2000) followed by a walking tour of John Portman’s key downtown buildings, including Peachtree Center (1961 through 2008) and the trio of influential hotels, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta (1967), the Westin Peachtree Plaza (1976) and the Atlanta Marriott Marquis (1985). The tour also includes an opportunity to visit to spaces not normally open to the public, including the AmericasMart buildings (note that the final tour itinerary is subject to revision).

Preceding the tour will be a special presentation by Mickey Steinberg, Senior Advisor of Portman Holdings, who joined the Portman organization in 1961. Mr. Steinberg has a long history of working with both John Portman & Associates and Portman Holdings, and served as executive vice president of the Portman Companies from the 1960s through the 1980s.
