Club World Cup 25: What We Know So Far

May 29, 2025

The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 is an exciting new tournament pitting 32 of the globe’s best Club Teams against each other.

The inaugural edition of this tournament will be held Summer 2025 across the US. Not only is this an opportunity for American soccer fans to see some of the world's greatest club teams, but this event also gives a preview of what next summer will look like when the US, Canada, and Mexico will host the FIFA World Cup 2026.

What's the difference between Club Teams vs. National Teams?

Most American soccer fans are likely more familiar with the FIFA World Cup where national teams play each other. This is where you see Argentina vs. England or France vs. Japan, with the players on each team typically hailing from each respective country.

Club teams are based in one place, often representing a city or a region. We’ll see teams from London playing teams from Los Angeles or Mexico City. The players on the teams will be from many countries.

(Think of it as the difference between playing for the USA Olympic Basketball Team vs. playing for the Atlanta Hawks)

Who’s Playing?

The teams come from six international confederations:

  • AFC: Asian Football Confederation
  • CAF: Confederation of African Football
  • Concacaf: Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football
  • CONMEBOL: South American Football Confederation
  • OFC: Oceania Football Confederation
  • UEFA: Union of European Football Associations

How does the Group Stage work?

In large soccer tournaments (notably the FIFA World Cup and now the FIFA Club World Cup) teams are divided into groups and each team plays every other team in the group round-robin style. Points are given based on the results: wins (3 points), ties (1 point), and losses (0 points). The two teams with the most points in each group advance to the next round, which is a knockout stage.

That means it’s possible to lose a game in the group stage and still advance. While group stage games are fun, the knockout stage games have the threat of “you lose and you’re out,” sometimes creating a more tense or exciting atmosphere.
