Downtown Decides

“Downtown Decides!” is the participatory budgeting program created by Atlanta City Councilmember Amir Farokhi  in partnership with the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID).

Beginning in December 2019, the public was invited to submit their best ideas on how to spend $1 million Downtown on transportation infrastructure. Over 100 proposals were submitted, and 33 of them made the ballot. Over 3,480 people who live, work, study in, or visit Downtown voted to select the final 17 projects to be implemented by the Atlanta Department of Transportation and ADID.

#01 Broad St NW Pedestrian-Only Environment
Install removable barriers in the Fairlie-Poplar district to create “pedestrian only” environment.
#02 ADA Crossing at Peachtree St & Williams St
Installation of an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) crossing at the NW corner of Williams Street and Peachtree Street.
#03 ADA Crossing at Ted Turner Dr & Williams St
Installation of an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) crossing at the NW and SW corner of Williams Street and Ted Turner Drive.
#04 Traffic Island at Peachtree Center Ave and Portman Blvd
Make traffic island at Peachtree Center Avenue and John Portman Boulevard more visible.
#05 Trash Receptacles for Sweet Auburn
Install more trash and recycling receptacles in Sweet Auburn.
#06 Jackson St Bike Lane
Add a bike lane on Jackson Street between Irwin Street and Auburn Avenue.
#07 Stripe Intersections to Deter Gridlock
Discourage gridlock at susceptible intersections with markings and signage.
#08 Marietta St Cycle Track
Install bicycle lanes along Marietta Street.
#09 Complete Street for Peachtree St
Peachtree Street's current configuration lacks the flexibility to safely serve all users.
#10 Peachtree Center Ave Bike Lane Reconfiguration
Reconfigure the alignment of the existing bike lane on Peachtree Center Avenue to improve safety for all roadway users.
#11 Ivan Allen Jr Blvd Resurfacing
Improve pavement condition of Ivan Allen Jr Blvd between Peachtree Street and W Peachtree Street.
#12 Design Wider Edgewood Ave Sidewalks
Fund design work to make construction plans “shovel ready” when subsequent funding is available.
#13 On-Street Loading Zone for Edgewood Ave
A designated location for delivery vehicles to stage while loading is needed to safely preserve the bike lane for cyclists.
#14 Wayfinding Signage for Hilliard St
Install creative wayfinding signs along Auburn Avenue to improve pedestrian movements.
#15 Remove Non-Functioning Pedestrian Push Buttons
Remove pedestrian push buttons at intersections with automated signal timing.
#16 Study ~20 Traffic Signals for Removal
Assess traffic signals in Downtown to determine whether intersections warrant signalization.
#17 Sidewalk Furniture at Auburn & Hilliard
Create a parklet space with street furnishings near the NE corner of Auburn Avenue and Hilliard Street.
